Network World summed up the numbers on October 21, 2026: 650 Group expects revenue from SONiC-based switches to pass $5 billion this year, with enterprise adoption growing more than 25% a year through 2027. Dell'Oro expects SONiC sales in AI scale-out networks to grow more than 50% a year through 2030 and to top $10 billion. Gartner counts about 2,500 organizations running it in production, a third of them enterprises. At the OCP Global Summit a week earlier Cisco showed "Cisco-validated SONiC" on Nexus 9000 and on the Spectrum-X based N9100 for AI fabrics of 8,000 to 32,000+ GPUs. Lenovo, NADDOD and NEXAI joined the SONiC Foundation, which now has more than 43 members. What the reports do not contain is a shared certification program or public interoperability results for SONiC on white boxes. Every distributor validates its own hardware list. The buyer validates the rest. ## What the numbers say - **650 Group:** SONiC switch revenue above $5 billion in 2026, enterprise growth above 25% a year to 2027. - **Dell'Oro:** AI scale-out SONiC sales growing more than 50% a year to 2030, revenue above $10 billion. - **Gartner:** around 2,500 organizations in production, one third of them enterprises. - **Cisco at OCP 2026:** validated SONiC on N9000 (100G/400G) and N9100 on NVIDIA Spectrum-X (400G/800G), positioned for AI fabrics from 8,000 GPUs up. - **Distributions you will meet in a tender:** Cisco, Dell Enterprise SONiC, Aviz, Hedgehog, plus the ODM builds from Edgecore, Celestica and others. Same kernel, different feature sets, different hardware lists. - OCP sessions this year covered route convergence under churn (Microsoft and Nokia) and the 2027 roadmap: SRv6 load balancing, packet trimming, richer telemetry. Roadmap, not shipping. ## What this means for the business A white box with SONiC costs a fraction of a branded switch with a branded OS. That is the whole pitch, and it is true. The saving comes with a transfer of responsibility. With a single-vendor switch the vendor owns the combination of ASIC, firmware and OS. With SONiC you own it: the ODM ships the box, the distributor ships the OS, and the "validated" list covers the pair they tested, on the release they tested. An AI cluster of 8,000 GPUs idling for an hour because a leaf switch mishandled PFC costs more than the license you saved. The economics still work. They work for the buyers who run their own acceptance. ## What this means for engineers - RFC 2544 and RFC 2889 on the exact ASIC, port mode and SONiC build you will deploy: throughput, latency, frame loss at line rate with 64 to 9,000 byte frames, full mesh. - **Route convergence under churn:** BGP with the number of prefixes and neighbors from your design, flap a link, measure the gap in traffic. OCP 2026 had a session on this for a reason. - **RoCEv2 under load:** PFC and ECN behavior with incast, pause storms, headroom buffers. Lossless on the datasheet is a setting. Lossless on the testbed is a measurement. - **Telemetry and the control plane under stress:** does gNMI keep up when the data plane is at 95%? Does the CPU on the switch survive a BGP storm? - **Upgrade path:** the same tests on the next SONiC release before you roll it out. Open NOS releases move fast and regressions are part of the deal. ## What to do If SONiC on white boxes is in your 2027 plan, write the acceptance program before the purchase order, with thresholds in the contract.
