In the US the count went from 160 to 237. Public cloud outages jumped from 73 to 132, an 81% increase in a week. ISP outages stayed in the 129 to 146 range, so the growth came from the clouds. Named incidents in October: Comcast on October 8 (1 hour 21 minutes in total, more than 10 countries), Hurricane Electric on October 10 and 14, Lumen on October 14 (10 minutes, 7 countries). The record this year is the week of August 31 to September 6 with 687 outages. The lesson is boring and expensive: someone upstream fails every week. The question is what your network does in the 10 minutes while they fix it. ## What the report shows - **Weekly global outages:** 303, 310, 387 for the last 3 reported weeks. US: 168, 160, 237. - **Public cloud:** 73 to 132 in one week (+81%). ISPs: 138 global, 77 in the US, roughly flat. - **Comcast, October 8:** three 27-minute waves, visible in more than 10 countries. - **Hurricane Electric, October 14:** 9 minutes, US traffic affected. Lumen, October 14: 10 minutes, 7 countries. - **Peak week of 2026 so far:** August 31 to September 6, 687 global and 537 US outages. ## What this means for the business You cannot test Comcast or Lumen. You can test what happens to your business when they go away for 10 minutes: does the SD-WAN switch to the second carrier, does the firewall cluster keep sessions, does the load balancer send users to the surviving cloud region. Most companies find out during the incident. That is the moment a 10-minute carrier outage becomes a 2-hour outage of your own, with a post-mortem that says "failover was configured". Configured is a setting. Working is a measurement. The cloud figure matters too. If a region of your cloud provider degrades, the application behavior depends on timeouts, retries and DNS TTLs that nobody has measured together. ## What this means for engineers - **Rebuild the failure on a testbed:** an impairment tool between your edge and the "ISP" that adds 200 ms, drops 5% of packets, then cuts the link. Then withdraw the BGP prefix instead of cutting the cable. These are different failures and your gear reacts differently. - Measure convergence as the gap in user traffic. The BGP timer is a different number. A 3-second reroute with 40,000 dropped TCP sessions is a different result from a 3-second reroute with 40 dropped. - **NGFW and SD-WAN:** session survival during failover, new session rate during the recovery, CPU on the surviving node when it carries 100% of the load. - **Load balancers and DNS:** how long users stay pinned to the dead region. TTL 300 means 5 minutes of errors after your "instant" failover. - Run it with real application mixes under load. Ten pings prove nothing. The failure that hurts is the one that happens at peak. ## What to do Pick the 3 upstream failures that would hurt most: carrier A down, carrier A degraded, cloud region A slow. Write down what should happen and how long it should take. Then measure it on a testbed before the next Tuesday outage does it for you.
