# How we test video QoE: start-up, stalls and channel zap time

In this article

A link passes its throughput test at the full subscribed rate, and the viewers on it still watch a spinner. A throughput test sends a steady stream. A video player works differently: it pulls a segment in a burst, measures how long the download took and picks the next bitrate from that. An IPTV box shows a channel only after its IGMP join is served. We score every emulated viewer by what a person on the couch would notice: seconds to the first frame, stalls, the bitrate the player settles on, the time a channel change takes.

## The bench

The device under test sits on the video path: a CDN edge cache, a BNG or BRAS, a home CPE, a Wi-Fi access point, an SD-WAN edge, a mobile core user plane, or a WAN link with its faults turned on. The bench emulates viewers in three forms. HLS and DASH players fetch manifests and segments over HTTPS from an origin behind the device and switch bitrate by buffer level and download time. Set-top boxes join and leave multicast IPTV channels with IGMP. Video call endpoints send real-time video in both directions.

The [traffic generator](https://test4net.com/products/traffic-generator?hsLang=en) fills the rest of the link with web, VoIP and file transfer flows, weighted by your traffic profile. [WANemu](https://test4net.com/products/wanemu?hsLang=en), in beta on 1G and 10G links, adds delay, jitter and loss per direction, random or in bursts. The player profiles, the bitrate ladder and the channel lineup are yours.

## What we check

- Start-up: time from the play request to the first frame, per player and as percentiles across viewers at your evening peak
- Stalls: rebuffering events per session and their total time, on the ramp and at the peak
- Bitrate: the profile each player settles on, the share of the session at the top profile, how often it steps down
- Edge cache: segment response time when viewers start the same live event at once
- Channel change: zap time from the IGMP join to the new channel, and the leave that stops the old one, with many set-top boxes zapping together
- Multicast quality: MDI per channel per second, delay factor and media loss rate (RFC 4445)
- Video calls: freeze time, received frame rate, loss and jitter per call in both directions
- Impairment: the same set with delay, jitter and burst loss on the link and bulk traffic filling it, QoS on

## What usually breaks

A policer with a shallow bucket on a BNG or CPE. A player fetches each segment in a burst at line rate, the policer cuts off the head of the burst, TCP backs off, and the segment arrives later than its playback time allows. The player reads that as a slow network and steps down. In a typical project a 50 Mbit/s profile carried its full rate in the throughput test, and a 4K player on it spent a third of the session one profile below the top. A larger burst size brought it back.

IGMP at the top of the hour. On an idle node a join takes tens of milliseconds, and a zap test with one box passes. When many boxes change channel at once, joins queue in the control plane and zap time grows past a second. A missing fast leave makes it worse: the old channel keeps flowing on the access line until the query timer runs out, two HD channels share a line sized for one, and MDI shows media loss on both.

Loss in bursts. A video call rides through 1 % random loss: FEC and concealment cover it. The same 1 % arriving in bursts, as on a busy Wi-Fi cell or a radio link, freezes the picture for a fraction of a second each time. On the [Wi-Fi bench](https://test4net.com/solutions/wi-fi?hsLang=en) it shows up as the cell fills to the design client count; on a WAN link, as burst loss on the Gilbert–Elliott model. A run with random loss at the same average misses it.

## What is in the report

Start-up time, stalls and bitrate per player, with percentiles across viewers. Zap time per channel against the join rate. MDI delay factor and media loss rate per channel per second. Freeze time and frame rate per call. All on one timeline with the impairment and the device counters, plus the player settings, the ladder and the emulator values, so the same evening replays on the next firmware.

## Where to start

Send us the devices on the video path, the bitrate ladder or the channel lineup and your peak viewer count. We answer with a draft test plan: the items, the bench layout and the dates. The report is yours to keep and to show to the vendor. [Write to us](https://test4net.com/contacts?hsLang=en) or look at [what else the bench does](https://test4net.com/services?hsLang=en).
