# How we test application QoE: transaction time per user

In this article

The branch link passed acceptance: 1 Gbps, zero loss, latency inside the contract. On Monday the CRM page takes 4 seconds to open at the branch, and the ticket says "the network is slow". Both are right: the acceptance ran test streams over an empty link, and the user opens a page of 80 objects over HTTPS through a proxy while a backup fills the same link. We measure what each emulated user waits for, transaction by transaction, with the rest of the traffic on.

## The bench

The path goes onto the CloudLAB bench as it runs in production: branch router or SD-WAN edge, NGFW or proxy with your policy, Wi-Fi access point, WAN link. [WANemu](https://test4net.com/products/wanemu?hsLang=en) gives the link its delay, jitter, loss and bandwidth cap per direction, from the measured profile of your provider. On the far side the bench emulates the servers: web pages with many objects, SaaS-like APIs over TLS, file shares, mail, DNS. They answer in a fixed time, so every millisecond that moves between runs comes from the path.

Each emulated user has its own address, DNS lookups, TCP and TLS sessions and a think time between clicks, and runs a script of real transactions: a page, an API call, a file download and upload, a mail. The mix and the bulk share (backups, updates, video) come from your NetFlow or the app-mix library of our [traffic generator](https://test4net.com/products/traffic-generator?hsLang=en).

## What we check

- Time per user for each transaction type: p50, p95 and p99 across users against a target agreed before the run
- Phases: DNS lookup, TCP and TLS handshakes, time to first byte, transfer, so the slow second has an address
- Failures: timeouts, resets, HTTP errors, a 200 with an error or block page inside
- Goodput per user, and how evenly the link is shared when many users pull files at once
- Bulk traffic: a backup fills the link; interactive transactions timed before, during and after, QoS off and on
- Distance: the same scripts at the delay, jitter and loss of each branch type, and the RTT where a transaction leaves its target
- Features on the path: TLS inspection, URL filtering, application control, proxy authentication switched on one by one, with the milliseconds each adds
- User count: steps up to the headcount of the largest site, and the step where p95 leaves the band

Throughput stays in the report as context; the verdict is in user terms, for example "the CRM page at p95 under 2 s for 300 users at a branch 60 ms away".

## What usually breaks

Round trips. In a typical project a CRM page opens in 1 s at the head office and in 4 s at a branch 60 ms away, with the link a fifth full (example numbers). The page makes about 50 sequential round trips: DNS for several hosts, a redirect, TLS through the proxy, objects a few at a time. 50 × 60 ms is 3 s, and a wider link removes none of them. Counted per transaction, the round trips send the fix to the application or the proxy, and the bigger link stays unbought.

The queue. A daytime backup fills the buffer of the WAN edge, and the RTT under it grows from 20 to 200 ms (an example). Each of those 50 round trips costs 10 times more, p95 of the page passes 10 s, and average link use looks healthy. A QoS class or a shaper with a short queue brings it back; we time it before and after, as in [our QoS tests](https://test4net.com/blog/how-we-test-qos?hsLang=en).

Inspection at peak. With TLS inspection on the [firewall](https://test4net.com/solutions/firewalls-ngfw?hsLang=en), each connection has two handshakes, to it and from it. At 9:00, with hundreds of logins at once, the box nears its handshake limit and the TLS phase of some users grows from tens of milliseconds to over a second. The average hides it, p99 shows it. DNS fails as quietly: a branch resolver drops queries under load, and the client waits 1 to 5 s to retry before the page starts.

## What is in the report

For every transaction type: p50, p95 and p99 across users per user step, impairment profile and feature set, with the phases broken out. Failures by cause, goodput per user, the same tables with bulk traffic off and on. The scripts, think times, mix weights and emulator settings, so the run repeats after the fix or with a competing box.

## Where to start

Send us the applications your users complain about, the sites they work from and what sits on the path. We answer with a draft test plan: the items, the bench layout and the dates. The report is yours to keep and to show to the vendor. [Write to us](https://test4net.com/contacts?hsLang=en) or look at [what else the bench does](https://test4net.com/services?hsLang=en).
