Technically this is an integration of existing products. There is no new technology here. The fact itself is what matters: Calnex (network emulation and synchronisation) joins forces with VIAVI, which took over Spirent's high-speed Ethernet and security testing business. Below: why such a pairing is needed, how it was assembled before, and what changes. ## Why an emulator and a generator in one testbed A traffic generator answers one question: what load can the device take. A network emulator answers another: how will this device behave in a real network. Separately, both answers are incomplete. A case from practice. A firewall passed RFC 9411 at 400 Gbps with zero latency. In production, between a branch and the cloud, there is 80 ms RTT, 10 ms jitter and 0.3% loss. TLS inspection performance and connections per second will be different. There is one way to learn how different before rollout: push realistic application traffic through emulated WAN conditions. Where you cannot do without it: - **SD-WAN and SASE:** path selection, failover and QoE under different latency and loss profiles. - **Cloud applications:** behaviour during migration between regions and with remote storage. - **5G transport:** midhaul and backhaul with latency budgets; SNE-Ignite is built for O-RAN fronthaul. - **Synchronisation and PTP:** the effect of delay and asymmetry on time accuracy (Calnex Paragon-neo). - **AI fabrics and DCI:** RoCEv2 with real latency between sites. ## What the components can do Calnex SNE-X, per the datasheet: wire-rate 1–100 Gbps (up to 28 ports of 1G/10G, up to 8 ports of 100G), intrinsic latency under 20 us, emulated delay up to 0.5 s on 10/25G as standard and up to 4 s as an option, jitter 0.1–100 ms, loss models from a plain percentage to Gilbert-Elliott, reordering, duplication, bit errors, link flap, scenario timelines. The product page claims a range up to 400GbE. VIAVI: TestCenter D2 1.6T, up to 6.4 Tbps of L2–3 traffic, RoCEv2/PFC/DCQCN. CyberFlood CF1000, up to 1.2 Tbps of application traffic and over 500 Gbps of TLS, NetSecOPEN methodology. ONE LabPro, up to 102 Tbps per controller for 800G/1.6T. ## How it was done before and what changes This pairing was assembled before the announcement too: the emulator went inline between the generator and the DUT, both instruments were driven through REST APIs, and the engineer stitched the scenarios together by hand. The pitfalls are well known: unaligned timelines, the emulator's own latency that has to be subtracted from the results, 2 consoles and 2 report formats. What changes: a shared architecture, joint presales and ready-made testbeds modelled on the Open RAN bundles the companies have offered since November 2025 (TM500/TeraVM/XEdge + Paragon-neo/SNE-Ignite/SNE-X). The press release says nothing about a single interface or shared automation. One indirect sign of how deep the integration goes: Calnex SNE datasheets are already hosted on the VIAVI site. ## The market map after the deals - Keysight (including Ixia) closed the Spirent acquisition in October 2025 for 1.46 billion dollars and kept satellite emulation, positioning and network automation. - VIAVI, at the demand of the US Department of Justice, bought Spirent's high-speed Ethernet (TestCenter), security testing (CyberFlood) and RF channel emulation businesses from Keysight for 425 million dollars. The regulator pointed to a combined Keysight and Spirent share of about 85% in HSE testing and over 60% in security testing. - Calnex remains an independent company, now closely tied to VIAVI through the partnership. - **Result:** 2 full stacks on the market, Keysight/Ixia and VIAVI + Calnex, plus Xena, Candela LANforge and open-source tools. ## What this means for the business The value of the pairing is measured in the number of surprises after launch. Checking an application under real network conditions takes a few days of testbed time. A failure in production means downtime, SLA penalties and missed deadlines. Customers now have a second full-stack supplier next to Keysight: one more argument in negotiations on price and support. The flip side: dependence on a single stack if you buy everything from one pair of vendors. ## What to do Testing SD-WAN, NGFW, cloud services or 5G transport? Check whether your testbed includes WAN conditions or only measures throughput.
